Thomas James Soper (c1817 - 1893. British)

Soper was an established Victorian landscape painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1836 and 1882. He also exhibited at the British Institution (BI), the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) and the New Watercolour Society (NWS).

He painted around London and on the Thames, in Devon, Wales and other parts of the British Isles.

It is worth noting that he was an outstanding favourite in the Victorian era for the clarity and simplicity of his style. He is typical of the landscape artists inaugurated by Thomas Creswick who followed in the path of Constable with his accent on greenery.

The Museum of Reading, Brighton Art Gallery and Goldaming Art Gallery all hold Soper paintings in their permanent collections. This painting was cleaned in 1980.
