A Cathedral View

£795.00

Henry Schafer circa 1900. Victorian Oil on Canvas. “A Cathedral View”. Signed H. Schafer.

Width: 52cm - Height: 61.5cm

Henry (Henri) Schafer (circa 1900. British).

Schafer is believed to be of French birth and produced his work around the end of the 19th century. He painted town scenes and buildings mainly in Northern France and Belgium. His style is reminiscent of that of Alfred Montague. He is known to have lived in Islington where spiralling debt forced him to paint pot boilers!

Schafer is clearly a typical example of an artist who was underrated at the time he lived whereas a century or so later, his work is very collectable.
